Devilian

Debating whether or not I should do a founders pack for this F2P open world dungeon crawling style MMO-ARPG being published by Trion Worlds.  The game is actually developed by South Korea’s Bluehole Ginno Games; Trion Worlds is bringing it to the west and performs the localization, operations, store front management, community management, the client frontend, and server backend.

Here’s some background on how the partnership came to be.

Thus it isn’t like they are developing it completely from scratch (just making changes that are more appropriate for the western market).  Thus the game is targeted for an actual live launch before the end of this year.  They’ve had several public betas (as well as an ongoing alpha test) and have made changes based on feedback.  The 3rd beta test is live this weekend until the 16th.

Korean MMO’s are usually very grind intensive and pay2win.  Devilian sort of deviates from that in that it plays more like Diablo at lower levels in terms of progression.  The game play consists of quests with a story line.   The game does have a store which has the usual cosmetic items.  There are also some boosts (though Trion Worlds has been listening to player feedback and have removed some aspects of it from the store).

I’m normally not into persistent world MMO’s but this one can be played solo to some extent.  Not sure how it is at end game though.  Like Path of Exile, the founder packs offers credits that can be used for these micro transactions.  I got one of the original supporter packs when the game went live and still haven’t used up all my credits; I haven’t really played again since early 2014 though.

I’ll eventually post about further details about this game once I’ve played it more (if they have more closed beta events in the future).  But briefly, the graphics on this are pretty decent, the game play (as far as combat mechanics) is also not bad and surprisingly smooth on what isn’t the best setup (I have to play it on my MacBook with integrated Intel graphics booted into Windows since this is the only computer I have Windows installed).  It’s hard to play though since lot of the text is too small to read clearly on my display (until I get a mini-DP cable to hook up to a regular display).  To be honest, the game is actually fun to where I can see myself putting some play time into it.
