This is going to be really short (for me). I believe the “winner” in all of the recent Genshin Impact content creator drama, was miHoYo/Hoyoverse because it took attention away from the CN rewards drama (whereby they did nothing extra for the western 4.4 update/rewards).

Being an actual “JAFO” in both of these has really left me with an even more disgusted view (of the gaming industry and with this type of gaming community). While there are those nuggets of positivity in online gaming, it’s the rest of it that is energy sapping where I feel like I am back to being done with this as an entertainment avenue.

I’m going to keep this relatively short (well, short for me) since I don’t care about wasting a lot of my life when it comes to gaming drama. But some…

I’m going to keep this relatively short (well, short for me) since I don’t care about wasting a lot of my life when it comes to gaming drama. But some other videos crept into my recommendations, and I ended up watching it (and just face palmed).

Some folks have never grown out of the “high school” clique/drama mentality unfortunately. That is what happens when some of these younger content creators became huge by being part of the “first mover” crowd when the game launched during COVID. The only two Genshin related content creators I followed that also played the game while streaming, were Mtashed and dish (I eventually unfollowed both since I just didn’t want to see any Genshin content period after a certain point; it had nothing to do with either of them). But back then, there were also other large Genshin content creators (who streamed the game) that I didn’t care for. I don’t have to name them because the two who I followed, should make it obvious of just how many did not resonate with me. Oh, and regarding Tectone, his style isn’t what I enjoy (part of this is also the whole internet personna which many have trouble filtering out), but he often times calls things out for what it is (often times stirring the hornets’ nest) because he doesn’t have a contract with miHoYo (effectively black balled) where he doesn’t have to walk that fine line like those content creators who are partnered/contracted with Hoyoverse. But like everything else, I’m also not the “I agree with everything” sort of viewer when it comes to these content creators (and where I feel that Tectone does need to tone it down/put a self-filter on it because there are way too many people who take things literally/believe everything they see/hear from those they follow like an internet groupie).

Now I left those content creators who focus on guides out of this (for the above) because I don’t tend to follow these folks (since as I explained before, I prefer the old-school approach with trying to discover stuff on my own). But this new drama included a fairly prominent guide maker (one who says he has social anxiety). Out of curiosity, I decided to watch some of his content (logged out via Incognito mode), and I would not have ever guessed he was an introvert or suffered from social anxiety. But I understand where he is coming from. Then I considered what he wrote in his twit-long posting (regarding the other Genshin content creator), and I also understand how Asian’s can be reserved/cautious (I fall into that category myself). I also grok how some have this over-the-top cliquish mentality when it comes to social circles (something I personally despised/never subscribed to during high school) where drama comes with that territory. This is why I despise gaming drama because I play games to get away from that stuff (which is why I prefer being socially distanced in-game and playing the way I want to play when I want to play it). But I digress…

Back in the day, many of these folks had to learn how to act as an adult post-high school because there was no internet with social media amplifying communities that could lavish a financially freeing income on those who were fortunate/lucky enough to get onto the higher rungs of that ladder early on like over the past decade. So there are some who haven’t actually experienced the hard knocks of real life (which teaches those important life lessons of how to act like an adult when dealing with others in real life situations). Without naming the actual names, let’s just say parts of this is misunderstanding from the lack of communication while other parts is also ego/narcissism and manipulative behavior. If you go to an IRL social gathering and have photos/videos being taken at that party, if you don’t want that photo/videos to be made public, you need to make that clear (I believe that part of this involved the VTuber who was there).

Eg. In Japan, there are many YouTube content creators who choose not to reveal their face. So when they do collaborations, they also make it explicitly clear if their privacy can be respected. Given how image rights and privacy are sort of ingrained in most parts of the social cultural structure in Japan, most will tend to respect that simple request. In the west though, it’s not the same (you really do need to make it clear and may get some weird looks/reaction in the process) so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to just post such a photo (which is probably what happened, where the other content creator felt that it was a violation of trust).

In the end, I see one person (who has social anxiety) trying to reach out to find out what it is they actually did wrong, while the other party has chosen to avoid/block that individual (while writing twit-long’s about said person). We’re not talking little kids here; we’re talking fairly large content creators who are grown adults having a lot of this spill out into the public domain, where you’d think you’d want to at least try to have an adult conversation (versus continually posting long tweets). It’s like the time I had to learn from others about the lies being told about why I was removed as one of the guild leaders in a game versus communicating it directly with me like a mature adult.

Let’s just say I believe the guide maker (who gave me positive vibes just watching some of his guides) versus the other guy who previously gave me “meh” vibes when he streamed Genshin (during the period when this whole content creator space for the game was in its early stages). As I stated back in 2021 (during the first rewards drama), this Genshin Impact/miHoYo/Hoyoverse community needs to grow the hell up (it’s why I’m constantly trying to keep my recommendations feed sanitized from anything related to miHoYo/Hoyoverse) but find the stuff unfortunately still popping up.

I’m just glad I am not an actual content creator (I’m just a random who freely blogs with no monetization intentions) since seriously, why would anyone want to be part of this cycle of negative drama as part of their livelihood. It’s why I view the entire gaming industry and its various ecosystems the way I do to the point where I am seriously looking at moving on from it as the hobby that I dedicate my free time to (and that is being helped by discovering and finding more fun/positivity in the IRL streaming community).

A bunch of videos popped up in my YouTube recommendations regarding what seems to be a mutiny of sorts that started in the CN community after the recent 4.4 livestream (these livestreams cover the upcoming new content, events, banners, and various other details). Since this update will also be including the annual Lantern Rite festival (which also coincides with the real life Chinese New Year), miHoYo also dropped some information regarding the rewards. Rather than me typing out this stuff, it’s just better to watch/listen to a content creator go over what happened (the following are just two of many videos covering this).

This has unsurprisingly begun to spill over to the english community which also has two of the game communities that miHoYo develops, at each others throats (on Twitter, YouTube comments, Twitch chat, etc). Now I try to stay out of drama like this (not worth the time) and the last time I covered Genshin related drama was back during the 1st anniversary event (in 2021) where the western player community went ballistic over the rewards. I spelled out how I felt about that whole thing in that post. I ended up following that up with TWO more postings: this one, and this one when miHoYo actually relented. Basically for myself, I don’t expect anything from these game companies (because the industry has proven itself to be led by mostly greedy bottom of the barrel scums that are better known as gaming executives). And since I am normally not into gacha style games, my experience with most other genres is the only time we see free stuff is as compensation (or very minimal stuff on its anniversary).

This new thing is pretty much the above again where miHoYo has shown that they really learned nothing from that previous drama (and I am actually wasting time again writing up all of this dreck). When a person or even a company shows you what they are the first time, believe them (so I kind of expect the minimum with most game companies).

The other thing with this drama though is the war between Genshin and HSR players. I play both but as I’ve also written before, I play them my own way. As I also noted (when I first tried HSR), I didn’t really care for the combat being turn based but changed my mind after a week of play when I found that it (plus 2x auto combat plus all of the QoL stuff) fit the casual potato playstyle I had switched to in recent years. Also during the time when Diablo IV was about to launch, I wrote this post that now is obviously wrong (regarding the lack of tribalism between Genshin and Honkai). I briefly mentioned that based on my observation at the time (compared to the constant war that happens between Diablo II and Diablo III, and PoE and Diablo III). With Diablo IV now being in the mix (with its own problems due to yet another new design team), some of that tribalism has included this latest version.

This kind of warfare is as old as Buick versus Chevy versus Ford versus Mercury versus Dodge versus Plymouth versus brands from Europe versus brands from Japan. And within this, you have wars between models. No different with guitar and drum brands. If you are into cooking, I would not doubt there are wars between cookware brands. In gaming, it’s also a given (which is why it’s funny because it’s bonkers that some believe it is sacrilege to play games that in their mind, are competitors). There’s a territorial component that is wired into our beings where there is an instinctual need for many to defend the superiority of that which they own/use, play, listen to (the Metallica versus Megadeth debates never fail to amuse me), etc. In my case, I usually tell those people I don’t give a shit what they think (it’s my time/money so I will do as I please with it). And like many, I do have an opinion, and will try to give my fair assessment (this blog is full of hot air about just that when it comes to the games I play or stop playing).

Now I did mention that HSR has a whole lot of QoL improvements that just streamlines a lot of the game systems (like completing your dailies is cake in HSR or farming for your various character and weapon ascension materials is just so much better in HSR). There’s a lot of this sort of stuff that has never been implemented in Genshin (or very slow in coming). It’s why I stopped filling in those surveys back in 2021 (but it became obvious to me when I started playing HSR, that a lot of that feedback had been implemented in that game). I’ve managed to pull most of the 5-stars I wanted in HSR without spending money because my Stellar Jades pile up relatively quickly (even though it utilizes nearly the same formula as Genshin with how you earn Primogems). But then again, I know with Genshin, I do tend to not do a lot of events (because they are just too long in the tooth whereas any event that is combat related in HSR, is 2x auto’d while I do other things). But yeah, I do agree that the Genshin development team could do a better job with bringing a lot of these streamlined QoL features to their game. Oh and yes, I did notice they gave us a free 5-star in HSR (Dr. Ratio). I didn’t think much of it though. Additionally, I’m about 100 pulls away of being able to select my free 5-star from the standard banner (don’t think Genshin had a system like that though maybe it was sort of covered with the amount of free Primogems they gave out during the launch window). Yes, I know some of the warfare comes from what some view as unequal treatment. But I digress…

IMHO, all of the unfollowing and review bombing aren’t the steps that are needed to get miHoYo to really do a self-reflection on how they approach rewards. Relenting and trying to give out better rewards doesn’t solve the root cause issue since it’s a short term bandaid fix. The longer term issue is the way the company views how it should reward their loyal player base. Now I can pretty much guess how an executive who is making over 7-figures, views this. Most will be like “these players are so ungrateful when we made this gesture that they should be thankful we give them anything at all”. The reason is the average executive mindset; it’s all about the bottom line (revenues and profit margins) versus showing actual sincere gratitude to their customer base (the written stuff is just PR to make it look like they care). Yes, there are some exceptions, but those folks are rare (and even more so in the gaming industry).

As I wrote before, the main thing these company execs will jump in panic to is when key game metrics (with regards to engagement) AND revenue numbers drop into a chasm. It therefore requires a combination of not even playing, but also not spending any money on the game because as I mentioned before, miHoYo executives (like most gaming industry leaders) know they have a mostly captive audience (where a good percentage of that pays little attention to drama like this). So far, no other game in this genre has been able to take actual share away from Genshin. Tower of Fantasy was not it (it has its own niche). Some folks are hoping Wuthering Waves will unseat Genshin. It’s possible, but will still be a tall order because miHoYo/HOYOVERSE has HOYOMIX (the music is a big part Genshin). I know one thing; I have no intention of taking up Zenless Zone Zero (miHoYo’s upcoming new franchise) because playing three of their games that draw on a similar formulae for its release cycle, is going to be too much.

I will probably just do a short single followup to this when 4.4 goes live (to see and report on what miHoYo does in regards to this whole thing).

Speaking of Genshin Impact, it’s been awhile since I actually played any of the main quests (story, archon, world). I longed stopped logging in daily and usually just do an event towards the tail end once all of the time gates have been unlocked. While Fontaine’s main questing isn’t as gated behind having to complete a whole lot of previous regions questing, it still required completing the main archon quest for Sumeru. And that was an honestly long one (taking several hours to complete).

Often times in the past, various event quests required having completed some main story quests (future patches allowed starting the event quest while you acknowledge there may be some spoilers or inconsistencies in your future playthrough). But it couldn’t account for every dependency (especially if you had a lot of older quests that hadn’t been completed yet).

So after I finally wrapped up a bunch of Sumeru quests (main story and main archon quest), I began clearing some of outstanding world quests that had piled up from Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru (I still have Octave of the Maushiro from Inazuma to do) and that’s only for the ones that I had accepted (there are probably more I haven’t yet picked up from the NPC’s yet).

What I don’t like about Genshin Impact’s character story quest system, is that you need to unlock them with those story keys (you get a key for completing every 8 daily commissions, and can only hold 3 keys at a time). This is in contrast to the streamlined system in Honkai Star Rail where you get a lot of these companion quests from the messaging system. While they’ve also been a lot more careful about having too much story related dependencies blocking progress in HSR, it still happens (there’s a point where the system is unable to suspend those dependencies if you have too many of these quests not completed).

To give an idea of just how far behind I am on Genshin Impact, I hadn’t yet even started act I of Historia Antiqua (Zhongli’s story quest) that was released in late 2020. And that applies to most all of these character quests since that period (some of these need to be completed in order to unlock newer character story quests). I did complete some of these on my other account (which I played a bit differently from the one I always considered my main) up until Inazuma. But after 2020, I pretty much abandoned this crazy game play (of playing two other accounts) while also decreasing the amount of time I played Genshin Impact on my primary account. So it became inevitable that these all of these different quests just piled up.

Over the past weekend, I managed to clear out part of this backlog so that I could at least get the Fontaine main archon quest to popup, and to also at least be able to unlock the character story quests that are piling up (if they weren’t dependent on this key system, then I’d probably just leave thing as is).

I will say the character stories have been good while the main Sumeru archon quest was really great (the best one so far IMHO). It definitely shows the progression in their story telling while also building up to dropping more information about our main character’s journey (and their missing sibling). This makes sense since there are only two more nations. But this is one of the hallmarks of this game for me; this main story, the exploration, and the music. The combat (needed occasionally for some of this questing) is just the icing on the whole cake. The only downside is all of these different questing types (where most of the world quest ones are not voiced) are competing for playing time along with the ones they introduce as filler material for events. There’s a point where “too much, is too much”. And if you don’t keep up (like what happened with me), it’s a constant catch up (you also want to take a breather in between).

So while I spent several hours getting through these various quests, it still feels like I have hours more to get through. And I know there’s going to be a point soon where I just want to take a break from this constant questing (where I’m going to fall behind again since the next major update is at the end of this month with 4.4). As I’ve noted before, games like Genshin (with it’s gacha monetization and designed mechanics) are ones that I prefer playing occasionally to avoid that burnout feeling (as that is the inevitable part given how this game and its systems are designed). Like I hadn’t done daily commissions in forever, but had to start doing them for the story keys. The pittance of Primogems you get from completing these aren’t any motivation for me either (I also feel the same for most filler events they throw in between).

This is one portion of the design of the game (and thus its calculated release cadence) that I don’t care for because it feels too formulative. But it is what it is (so I just don’t fall into the trap of forcing myself to play to try and keep up). The point is that I would find the game more enjoyable if it weren’t so blatantly methodical with major content/story/zone expansion/new character banners being mixed in with time gated events that have long in the tooth filler quests.

Years after such official merchandise has long been sold domestically in China, miHoYo (HOYOVERSE) has finally opened a merchandise store on Amazon’s US site for some of these physical collectibles. Until the 24th, they are running an “event” which will offer discounts on many of the items. It remains to be seen if they will expand this to other countries or partner with retailers more specific in those countries.

The caveat since the opening on the 15th however, is that “technical difficulties” have plagued the sale of any item (everything has shown up as unavailable and remains so as of this posting). I am expecting them to make a good sum of money from this. The positive is making this stuff more easily accessible/available outside of China/Asia (true, for those who were previously buying/importing/selling this stuff on eBay for a huge markup, this will detract from their cottage market).

UPDATE: merchandise is now online.

The only official merchandise I had purchased previously was the Paimon figure (box pictured below) since I was able to get it back near release at a reasonable cost (everything else tended to be outrageously marked up though).

First, a quick summary regarding how I view the game in general. Genshin Impact for me is what I refer to as a filler game. The story (with new major updates such as with the opening of Fontaine) and exploration aspect, is what draws me back to the game as a casual potato.

The only times I logged in almost everyday was early on (during the 1.x era), and especially during that short period when I had an active sub (Blessing of the Welkin Moon) in the 2-3 months leading into Inazuma (since I wanted a buffer to pull several characters). I also stopped doing daily commissions before Tsurumi Island was opened (whenever I did play, I would occasionally do them like when they were tied to a web event).

Additionally, I stopped doing Spiral Abyss (the only real end game in Genshin) since the carrot that is dangled, isn’t really worth it (plus I know from my other uncapped account that I stopped playing after Inazuma opened, was to just keep my main one capped at AR45 where I don’t have to grind to get better artifacts). Remember, it’s all relative because while my characters end up capped at level 80 (and I cannot attain the highest talent levels), monster damage and hit points are capped well below my character level. In a game like Genshin, I’m not looking for constant challenges (more so as I’ve become more comfortable being ultra casual).

I bring this up since playing the game this way has prevented me from encountering the sort of burn out that many OG Genshin players have been experiencing. miHoYo/Hoyoverse isn’t going to change their existing formula for the game because they don’t have to (whales still throw money at it while the competition hasn’t been able to steal away enough players to make a dent in the engagement metrics). So their updates follow a fairly predictable pattern when it comes to major/minor content patches, filled in between with events (I also don’t try to do every single one of these events either).

I did clear some archon and story quests that were beginning to really pile up though since even though they implemented a way to start some event quests that had pre-requisites, there was beginning to be a lot more of them where a required NPC character was “busy” with one of these yet to be completed story quests (whatever backend design they had to block NPC’s this way, really needs to be undone like how it is in Honkai: Star Rail (HSR), where all it takes is changing the navigation to temporarily unblock that condition). To be even more blunt, a lot of these issues including the streamlining of dailies that is in HSR, really needs to be implemented in Genshin). I haven’t yet completed all of Sumeru’s story and world quests yet either (it piles up this way when I play this as a filler title that I have no desire to play every day).

With 4.0 and Fontaine, they made a big change where players need to have only completed the Mondstadt story quests in order to unlock the Fontaine MSQ. If not, an actual new player would face a multitude of hours playing through Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru. Yes, that means they need to stop having way too many references for prior areas being major parts of the lore/MSQ in these newer continents going forward. As it stands, there’s already a lot of details that I’ve shoveled off from all of the prior continents (and as each new zone is released, this is only going to get worse to keep track of). I know there are some lore focused players who do keep track of this stuff in detail, but I’ve personally reached a point where I don’t want to have all of that stuff cluttering my mind (this is another change as I’ve gotten older).

With that said though, one of the biggest exploration components I had previously mentioned (as something that would be great for the game), has finally come to the game; underwater exploration. I’ve long compared and given Genshin a lot of high marks for its exploration when putting it side-by-side with Guild Wars 2 (which I really enjoyed when I leveled via exploration). The verticality in Genshin is excellent with physics to match. The only thing that was missing was being able to dive underwater. With Fontaine being the land of hydro, they finally delivered this game play. It’s only available in Fontaine though (I don’t see them changing the rest of the world though similar to how they haven’t made the Waverider system available for Mondstadt and Liyue except for some temporary events).

Digressing, this is actually the mindboggling part about the game; there’s so many one-and-done content they make (prime example was the initial Golden Apple Archipelago or this recent summer event with the temporary Veluriyam Mirage zone). I wrote about this before (where a lot of this could be repurposed as game systems that could be used to obtain materials via alternative means) where the game play loop could be really expanded (but it is clear this is not their objective).

Nonetheless, it is still impressive what their designers are able to come up with for new game play elements that even if they are mostly one-and-done, makes the game play loop intriguing. Sure some puzzles can turn into annoyances/tedium. However, most of them tend to be well done (and since I just started Fontaine, haven’t really encountered many of them yet; I haven’t even unraveled most of the ones in Sumeru yet). Additionally, while I’ve unlocked a lot of the Fontaine waypoints and completed several world quests, I’m still part way through the MSQ on Sumeru that opens the Fontaine story line. Yes, there is some disjointing aspects like this given the change they made to access, but I don’t mind that you can play this way either.

I sort of expect to begin falling behind on the story quests again (I haven’t even mentioned the various character story quests since I haven’t done most of them due to their contingency on having completed the prerequisite ones) unless I hit one of those points where I am in the mood for lengthy story/lore sessions (but I also don’t want Genshin to be monopolizing most of my time either).

3 weeks in (with the first major update just a few days away), I’ve also managed to clear most of the existing content including Simulated Universe World 6 (Difficulty 1). The thing I need to work on now is building up some other characters so that I have a second team for Forgotten Hall 11-15 (similar to Genshin Impact’s Spiral Abyss from floor 5 onwards, you need a team of different characters for each half of Forgotten Hall 11-15).

I also managed to get Seele’s Light Cone on the “weapon” banner around 70 pulls in (in Genshin, I never pulled on the weapon banner since I prioritized the characters I wanted). When I look at my account now, if I hadn’t pulled Seele early on, I doubt I would be as engaged with the game over this initial 3 week period.

I also finally pulled my 3rd 5-star character (Himeko) on the standard banner and will be building her for my second team. Right now, the largest constraint is resources (XP books, ascension materials, Trace mats, etc). My primary team right now is the Trailblazer (Fire), Sushang, Natasha, and Seele. I used this team to clear Simulated Universe 4-6 (4-5 utilizing The Hunt resonance while 6, I used Abundance and mostly auto battled the fight). The Abundance path is actually OP since you can get consistent healing, ability to remove debuffs, and a buff to DEF. The main character trailblazer was also crucial since it is able to provide shielding (in addition to the shields I selected from some Preservation cards), taunt and tank a lot of damage in the process. Natasha (healer) was wiped in the final phase (with Cocolia under 37%) but I got the necessary healing from the Abundance path of resonance to close out the fight.

Note: This was with a lot of 3/4-star relics that aren’t optimal (relic quality, properties [subject to RNG], and level add a lot of power/defense mitigation to a character), nor fully leveled (without a lot of swiping, relics are currently the most resource intensive to level up at this point in the game; like Genshin, you eventually accumulate enough fodder pieces for leveling up the better ones; I have only a few 5-star pieces and those are really “costly” to get leveled up at this time). This is fine for difficulty 1, but as you push difficulty levels at higher Equilibrium (world) levels, 5-stars with the optimal properties fpr each character is going to matter.

I will say the turn based combat is beginning to grow on me primarily because with most fights, I can set it for auto and farm for materials that way (while I do something else). It’s a feature that makes casual game play even better since I can pay attention to other things while farming materials. The fact that I am still playing this 3 weeks in, signifies a win for miHoYo (because yes, I am now curious to see how the story progresses).

UPDATE: Due to how well the healing/defense buff worked with the Abundance path, I switched out Natasha with Bronya (for her damage/crit/speed buffs), and that shortened the boss fight by over 3 minutes.

While most of the hardcores have already completed the existing content and challenges within the first week (or first couple of days) since launch, folks like myself are still progressing along. Since my previous 1 week posting, I’m now at Trailblazer Level 38 (and should be hitting Equilibrium 4 in a few days). I finished what exists of the current MSQ (until the next content updates drops) this weekend, and am progressing through Simulated Universe World 4, and generally grinding the mats for leveling Traces, Relics, Light Cones (and also accumulating as much character leveling materials).

In HSR, you really do need to build different teams (and thus have to level up a lot of characters and all of their skills which like Genshin, requires different materials) to get through the challenging content. My primary DPS is Seele (while she is Quantum damage, her ability to perform consecutive actions when stacking SPD, just makes her that good) while my healer is Natasha. The other two characters I switch around as needed. Like for the Ebon Deer boss, I ended up leveling Qingque for added Quantum damage. And then to get past Simulated Universe 3 (the Gepard boss fight), I leveled up Sushang (extra physical damage) and the main character (set to Fire) as the tank (her taunt, shield, and defense basically turned Natasha into a backup in case the team needed healing) while utilizing the Hunt path.

Basically, the main character should be constantly leveled since it’s effectively a free 5-star that will likely be required (like with the Cocolia boss fight where it needed to be part of the team in order to complete the story quest). Right now, it’s also my tankiest character that can soak up a lot of damage. I’ve had to sideline Bronya for the time being since she wasn’t providing as much utility (as support) compared to some of the 4-stars I ended up leveling. Right now, I’m trying to build up Tingyun and March 7th (supposedly her shield breaking ability is pretty decent).

As for the turn based combat, I’ve come to tolerate it since the MSQ is interesting enough. From miHoYo’s perspective, someone like myself would be a win in terms of the game keeping me engaged into the 2nd week. My luck in HSR is about the average (so having pulled Seele early on, and then getting a 2nd copy to open up Eidolon 1, does make a world of difference when it comes to this continued engagement).

This is a follow on to my original impressions posting (where I mentioned I would continue playing for the first week). Since then, I now have a better feel for…

This is a follow on to my original impressions posting (where I mentioned I would continue playing for the first week). Since then, I now have a better feel for the game at Trailblazer Level 28, along with more characters in my roster (the following is as of this posting).

My first 5-star came via the guaranteed one at 50 pulls; that was Bronya. My next 5-star came at the 10th pull on Seele’s banner where I got Seele. So having these two strong 5-stars early on (and my only 5-stars to date) as part of my main team, made lot of the combat easier. Since then, my RNG with pulls has gone flat (outside of the characters you unlock for free from the story/events, the only other characters that I’ve gotten from pulling are Tingyun, Sampo, and Pela).

Additionally, I recall the following cinematic trailer for Honkai Impact 3rd where the younger versions of Seele and Bronya have this strong friendship in that universe (so it was sort of nice having these two characters from nearly the get go).

Bronya’s character model in Honkai: Star Rail (HSR) is based on her Herrscher of Reason model in Honkai Impact. But again (since I only played Impact for a brief time), I’m very unfamiliar with a lot of the details of the lore, and know miHoYo has ulterior motives with using HSR to get uninvested folks like myself, more engaged with the Honkai franchise (given how long Honkai Impact has been out). But it is interesting seeing how Bronya and Seele’s relationship unfolded in this alternative universe as alternative older versions of the originals. Yes, there are a lot of throwbacks (like the orphanage aspect as one of many examples), but there are also a lot of twists that telegraph that these characters from the original Honkai Impact universe, aren’t the same ones (even Bronya’s last name is different in HSR).

As I leveled up and unlocked more systems, the thing that began to stick in my mind is how large parts of HSR is sort of a re-skinned and partially simplified variant of Genshin Impact. As noted in my initial impressions posting, HSR borrows heavily from Genshin Impact for most all of its systems (just different naming and graphics), but without the real time combat or massive open world environments. It’s actually a shrewd move (reusing already developed backend designs) where some of the most production intensive parts (for the player facing parts of the client), were simplified in HSR.

The game world for example are a lot of map instances with restrictive pathing (thus no climbing, jumping, or gliding); basically the exploration component is rudimentarily distilled in HSR. The Light Cones (graphically depicted as cards with artwork on them) are weapons (but don’t require the need to come up with unique weapon design visuals like in Genshin). Furthermore, the combat damage is calculated almost identically to Genshin Impact (according to theory crafters who delved into that). The turn based combat also reduces the need for a lot of the real time visual animations and effects (since combat is graphically depicted as mostly still frames with a few animated sequences in them).

My initial concern was that the MSQ wouldn’t be enough to overcome my personal dislike (now) of turn based combat. As it turns out, the story (along with really strong Japanese voice acting) has been good enough to keep me playing (completing the first planet Jarilo-VI). That plus most non-story critical combat can be auto’d at 2x speed.

This overall familiar character/account progression system that is borrowed heavily from Genshin Impact, means there isn’t a whole lot of completely new concepts to learn. Similarly like early Genshin, you are struggling with the lack of resources to level up your characters (so it helps when you get decent pulls early on), their traits (like Traces which are akin to Talents in Genshin), Relics (Artifacts in Genshin), and Light Cone. Like Genshin, I can see this being a casual “filler” game (hardcores have already completed all of the content including completing Simulated Universe World 6) like Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy are for me (these are pretty much what I’ve been playing outside of ArcheAge Unchained which I know I will stop playing after my subscriptions expire in September since Kakao Games Europe intends to perform a server merge in August; but this is really meant for another post).

As someone who didn’t really play Honkai Impact 3rd (I gave it a brief whirl when it was ported to PC), I didn’t really pay attention to Honkai: Star Rail (in terms of its design and development). I therefore went into the games launch “blind” and sort of expected this title to follow in the vein of Genshin Impact (where I thought this would be an action combat version of the Honkai series with alternate versions of characters from the prior games universe along with new ones). The graphics look excellent (on very high) as is the voice acting (I switched to Japanese). So it ended up being a surprise and disappointment to me that the combat was turn based (this considering Genshin Impacts excellent, impactful, and visceral action combat system).

A lot of the other systems in Honkai: Star Rail already borrow heavily from Genshin (like portions of the character progression and development, the store and currency with just different naming, the gacha system, etc). But depending on your perspective, the combat being turn based (while enjoyable to a degree), left me feeling flat after playing through the early MSQ. There was a time when turn based RPG’s were my staple (Wizardry I-V for example). But the entire real time combat that came with the first Diablo, forever changed my preferences (where every turn based game I tried after, failed to hold my attention for long).

Maybe Honkai’s already deep story and lore (which Star Rail will likely have different twists compared to 3rd which from my watching of many of its story trailers and cinematics, has a lot of tragedy with the main characters being killed off), might be able to keep me engaged despite the turn based combat. But parts of me are saying probably not since even with Genshin Impact, I’ve fallen way behind in the quests department (there’s a lot of archon, world, character, and main story quests that I’ve yet to even start, let alone complete).

I remember how I similarly went into Genshin Impact “blind” (expecting the gacha aspects to turn me off early on), but ended up being impressed with the fun and hook of the early game play and exploration (that worked along side the story). Portions of that hook I find are missing in Star Rail (and while some of it does have to do with the turn based combat aspect, there are other elements that are missing); I’m not sure if it’s because a lot more systems will open up (since I stopped at around Trailblazer Level 7; this is the equivalent of Genshin Impact’s Adventure Rank) and I am still onboard the ship (which limits the exploration aspect). Nonetheless, my initial impressions so far is it’s ok, but nothing earth shattering either. I plan on sticking to it for the next week to see how the systems and environments open up past Trailblazer Level 10/20.
