MISTOVER Pre-order + Demo

Krafton announced the pricing for MISTOVER while also providing a time limited demo (it runs for 10 minutes and seems to be a build used for conventions).  The turn based RPG will be launching on October 10th.

Until October 9th, there is a 10% discount ($26.99) on the regular price of $29.99.  It remains to be seen if Krafton is overpricing the game (Darkest Dungeon costs $24.99 while David Brevik’s “It Lurks Below” costs $19.99).

The game controls for MISTOVER harken back to the pre-mouse days; the game doesn’t respond to mouse input as a matter of fact (which may frustrate players since the demo does not make that fact clear).  Likewise are the usual default keyboard inputs (like you don’t use the Return key; the default is “C” while “X” is used in place of the Escape key (these bindings can be changed in the Options and I switched them to Escape and Return due to muscle memory).  But it does support game controller input.

The demo can be run as many times as possible so it’s best to run it the first time with the tutorial tips (which will eat into the time but also provide info needed for subsequent tries to clear the mission objective (the time limit should really be increased to 30 minutes just so you don’t feel rushed).  The objective is to find chests (which has event coupons inside) in the dungeon and to bring them back (you have to find the keys first).  I tried zerging through but ended up in encounters where I initially engaged; that first combat took over 6 minutes (my party defeated all the monsters but I ran out of time to complete the actual mission).

The Japanese voice over (the only option) is pretty good and really gives the game a classic JRPG feel.  The game text itself can be switched between English, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified/Traditional Chinese.  I personally have not kept up with the dev blogs which discuss the game mechanics (like I’m not sure if it is like old school rogue-likes where your party may need rest, if characters age, etc).

Turn based RPG’s (actually text based ones before them) are something that I enjoyed a lot when personal computers were this new thing and this sort of brought me back to my Wizardry days (just with much better graphics relative to the genre).  I’m undecided yet if I will be buying this as a pre-order (or waiting to see how Krafton manages the game updates over several months).
