Devilian received a complete graphical makeover with many elements taken from TERA once Bluehole’s (back then, Bluehole Studios) acquisition of Ginno Games was finalized. That is where part of my interest in Devilian came from (along with its ARPG influenced camera and combat) as I like the style and aesthetics that Bluehole’s graphics design team for TERA has created.
Given that TERA’s game system design and dungeon setup subscribes to the typical MMO holy trinity (tank, healer, DPS), I rarely played it (even though I bought the physical Collector’s Edition). Lot of that also had to do with that game that Blizzard launched in 2012… I ended up deleting my first initial character awhile ago (level 20ish sorcerer) and just started over from scratch due to the changes the game has gone through. But I still don’t consider this one of the first MMO’s I’ve played.
While Devilian is more or less a hybrid MMO where it’s not as open world (zones are segmented so there is no seamless transition between them) like this and its dungeons were designed to be clearable with any combination of classes, I still do consider it the first MMO that I’ve played (in terms of time put into it on the Korean, Thai, and then North American version).
Ironically, the roles are now reversed since I’ve put Devilian on the backburner (possibly for good) while TERA (besides Soul Worker Online) is where I have been putting most of my play time into recently. What helps for folks like myself that don’t have max level characters (my ninja is almost to 61, my sorcerer and valkerie are 60) is the Vanguard Request (a dailies system) provides some pretty decent rewards including level appropriate gear that helps up to level 65 (current max level) which is where end game gearing (dungeon drops) and content begins.
The game also has short term novelty items like shape changing ones where you can temporarily make your head or your entire character huge (the effect coupons can stack). Waiting around Freedom Plaza in Velika is a good way to see a lot of items (cosmetic, pets, mounts, etc) that are no longer available as well as some of the novelty effect ones.
