…is unsurprisingly, but also sadly non-existent given the fact that the official game will be shutting down on PC (console will continue at least for the time being) in less than 2 months (June 30th). May 1st was the original NA launch while EU is May 3rd (today). Gameforge (which took over NA) was already clocked out from the game when they began publishing SOLO; it is clearly running with a skeleton crew now.
Still, that shouldn’t stop them from at least recognizing this milestone since there aren’t many games that manage to survive the 10 year mark. Sure, some folks may argue that TERA should’ve been closed years ago. But if it weren’t making any money, that would’ve made the most logical sense (the game clearly was still making both publisher and developer money until at least this past year). And some folks may argue why acknowledge it when the game will close in less than two months. The negatives shouldn’t completely outweigh the positive aspects of the game.
The “permanent” events Gameforge are running until the closure is insulting at best. But this 80% off discount on pets and mounts really shows this sort of lack of situational awareness (especially the last sentence which reads: “Don’t forget: treat them well, and they’ll be your loyal companions forever!”). Uhm, hello? The PC version is going away officially forever. Kapput! Yes, there are private servers and a method to run the game offline (as noted before). But not everyone is aware of either option because not everyone follows this stuff online. In short, it comes across as out of touch.
Gameforge however is running a “Best of TERA” art contest (to highlight players memories of the game) with some physical loot as prizes for the top 30. I hate to be cynical about this, but it’s probably being done out of a need to get rid of TERA related merch that has been sitting in their office, occupying space.
Gameforge ran the EU version from the start for 10 years (I’m from the NA takeover from En Masse Entertainment), and sadly they can’t even find it within themselves to acknowledge this regardless of the game officially coming to an end at the end of June. In lieu of that, I personally do want to acknowledge 10 years of TERA in the west. While it was Devilian that was my first MMO, it’s connection to TERA is what brought things full circle. Happy 10th anniversary TERA (and many more to come in an offline fashion going forward)!
