Unreal 3 Engine Build Upgrade To Accompany TERA 64-bit Client Update

This was from the test server/client patch notes back in April where there was a brief notice about the Unreal Engine 3 update being part of this move to a 64-bit client.  This is what I was hoping they would do (using a later build of UE3 like the one they are using for ELYON; what was previously known as Ascent: Infinite Realm).

As I mentioned in that prior posting, “TERA was built using an older build of UE3 (a build in the 4000 range). Krafton’s (Bluehole) other MMORPG A:IR, uses a much newer build from the 10000 range) where Epic had over the years, added capabilities that didn’t exist in those older builds.”  While Bluehole noted there won’t be any immediate noticeable change to graphics performance, they did mention there will be improvements later (since they’ll be able to take advantage of the added capabilities and performance increases in this later UE3 build).  Additionally, Bluehole did write their own performance increasing extensions for A:IR’s UE3 build.  I was impressed with the graphical performance during the A:IR Thai/SEA beta test (my impressions of the graphics performance are near the bottom of that blog entry) so there’s a lot of future boosts awaiting TERA in this department.

So while I am not a fan of the direction that TERA has taken with its game play in recent updates, I do like that Bluehole/Krafton are improving the actual foundations of the game to allow it further longevity.
