TERA – Skywatch Companions Note (aka Rant)

This is pretty much a straight up rant about the piss poor user interface for these new companion/servants not to mention En Masse Entertainment failing to properly preview this update.  This time around, I failed to do my own homework ahead of time due to the lack of time.  I also should not have to jump through hoops like that (downloading other regions version of the game since they tend to get these updates a week or two earlier).

Pets were previously registered in the skills UI (along with the active skills for a class) where there was no limit.  Patch v81 brought about changes to how past pets and the new companions would be managed where they were moved into their own UI.  That part is fine.  What is absolutely asinine is how KRAPTON decided to limit the maximum amount of registered pets to be just 10.  I do get there is a monetization aspect to that just like inventory and bank space where you have a cash shop item to extend the amount of storage.  I will be blunt… this entire system is a cash grab laden with ungodly RNG (Krafton has honed in on their hardcore demographic across all regions that continue to stupidly throw money at these type of game systems).  My point is this crap is sprung on players unless you took the time beforehand to look at the details (from K-TERA or the other regions that deployed the update a week or two earlier).

Additionally, many players have well over 10 pets since the games achievement system rewarded non-functional cosmetic ones (i.e. they have no looting or storage function) so they are going to be forced to purchase additional slots since they aren’t bankable.  All previous pets that were registered are resent in the mail (so best thing is to just leave the ones that won’t be used in the mail).

I was one of those who began registering them until I hit the 10 limit and realized that there was no way to unregister them (like if you make a mistake).  Yes, there is that (#/10) in the UI but I also erroneously thought there would be a mechanism to remove them from that list.  WRONG.  And most of the ones I right-clicked were essentially these non-functional legacy pets from achievements while my functional ones (auto gathering and auto looting) cannot be registered.  As someone who enjoys collecting them, this pisses me off to no end.

Shortly after a thread was created on the EME forums regarding this, a staffer posted a link to the cash shop items (Companion List Expansions) that weren’t initially in the shop.  They are cheap but that isn’t the point.  Each pet/companion also gets one single free name change before you need to purchase an actual name change voucher (before, you could change the name of pets freely any number of times).  Like I said earlier, unabashed and shameless cash grab by both developer and publishers.

The point is that EME no longer even puts effort into previewing what is coming down the pipeline where it is becoming obviously clear that we need to go and check out the other regions sites and even their version of the game to become better informed.

I don’t know why the games I tend to enjoy always ends up having shitty development teams and/or publishers (as I noted before, EME wasn’t always like that but they’ve steadily slid into the sewer since 2016 and are now in the same league that Trion Worlds was before their insolvency last year).
