This is in the US only and based on a head-to-head comparison on the Xbox One since PUBG is currently exclusive to that console for the time being (Monster Hunter World is available on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4; it will be available on the PC later this year).
Japanese game development studios would actually do well globally if the leadership could get their heads out of their rears. The biggest roadblock for many (at least at the top) is the hesitance to deal with the language barrier gap. Even to this day, there exists this mentality of not wanting to have to bother with the hassles involved with language differences. So only a handful of interesting titles ever see the light of day outside the country (yes. many do export the Japanese version but those numbers are a pittance compared to if those titles were properly localized the published).
Sega has committed to bringing some of their recent releases of Ryu ga Gotoku (Yakuza franchise) to both Europe and the Americas; I still believe a localized version of Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! (which is a spin off based in the time period of Feudal Japan).
There was a time when I conceptually had an idea for an ARPG style game based loosely on this period (I say loosely because character design wise, it wasn’t going to be on the realistic end of the spectrum). There have been many themed games but usually as side scrollers or 3rd person action combat style games (like the Yakuza series) and numerous mobile versions that borrow heavily from the Heroes of Incredible Tales (HIT) style combat.
Like everything else, fleshing out the actual class details (Samurai, Sohei, Ninja, Ikko-Ikki, Ronin, Ashigaru) where they felt unique to the game play, represented a huge stumbling block when you start getting down to the nuts and bolts of designing their combat and underlying systems (including a solid itemization design). Then you need to layer in interesting items and combat skills to make the loot hunt fun and engaging. In summary, it never went past the concept phase (and no, I don’t have a design document).
But I’m going way off on a tangent. I believe Monster Hunter World will do incredibly well once it launches on PC later this fall (hopefully more Japanese studios will take note).
