Marvel Heroes – “another one bites the dust”

How it came to an ungraceful shutdown is not the way any company should terminate a service (in this case we have two parties; Disney which owns the IP for Marvel and Gazillion Entertainment which licensed the IP in order to develop and publish Marvel Heroes).

Yes, we all digitally agree to the EULA/TOS that a game service may be terminated at any time.  That’s the legalese part but from a consumer goodwill point of view, a little bit of respect goes a long way.  A month or two heads up allows players to come to terms with the closure and gives them time (if they choose) to login to take in the game for one last time.

A good example for me would be Devilian Mobile which I hadn’t played for some time.  Once I learned the final sunset date (November 29th), it gave me time to download a copy of Nox and loaded up the final APK so that I could record my characters (since I managed to collect a lot of wacky costumes).  Tomorrow, I will load up the game one final time and record my game play a bit just to have something to remember it by.  It’s not that I feel the game play was anything great; it has more to do with how much the Devilian franchise has been a large part of my personal gaming experience for the last 3 years.

By comparison, the remaining players of Marvel Heroes didn’t have much time to prepare for its closure, to take in the game for a final time (especially since the sudden closure was rumored to take place the day after Thanksgiving in the US when many are spending time with family).

But as of today, the plug was unceremoniously pulled on the game servers bringing yet another MMO to a close.

Microsoft for their part, are refunding every single purchase for Xbox One customers (as much as I derided the company in the past, this is a very classy and consumer friendly move on their part).
